"This is a very helpful book which will guide serious rosarians through the often mystifying maze of how to pronounce the names of many of their favorite roses. Roses make internationalists of us all! – and this will help us make the transition with suavity and poise."

How can one begin to acknowledge all those responsible for the vast varieties of roses that fill our rose gardens today? Surely the list would be extensive if one includes every collector, admirer, poet, artist, and dreamer who has quietly strolled through both formal and casual rose gardens.

And who are the passersby who just had to stop and smell what some consider the world's most beloved flower? The perpetuating and proliferating interest by so many has kept the genus Rosa near our souls through times of uncertainty, times of peace, and times of passion.

Certainly the famed Empress Josephine of France deserves applause for her contribution to the hybridization and propagation of roses. So do the numerous cultures previous to our own—the pioneers and grandparents who shared our enthusiasm for roses.

As for help with this guide specifically, I must acknowledge those who provided information, emotional support, and stories of their own. Special thanks to:

  • Lee Sherman, my mentor and friend, who imports rare bud wood into the United States for her old rose garden collection of nearly 600 roses and for our country's commerce.

  • The hybridizers, grafters, and dealers who make great efforts to get us baby roses every spring, including that one rose we just must have.

  • The historians for their endless hours of research, the landscape designers with their artistic ability to "paint" with the vast pallet of bloom colors, and the "Texas Rose Rustlers" who respectfully ask permission before sampling the long lost beauties, then share their finds with us all.

  • The South Bay Heritage Rose Group , Friends of the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens, and the City of San Jose; for their efforts in creating the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden. I often lost myself in serene contentment in this magnificent old rose garden. I also gratefully acknowledge numerous picturesque gardens and collections, both public and private.

  • The American Rose Societyand its local branch societies that offer a gathering place to discuss all things "rosy." The ARS has inspired many a soul toward the realization that rose gardens are possible to create and manage right in our own back yards.

I thank you all—those mentioned and those missed—as I anticipate spring, fill my senses in summer, taste the fruits of autumn, and thoughtfully dream each winter about my favorite bloom of all...
